At Guardian, we are always looking for tools and technologies that elevate patient care and support our medical team. We are currently in the early stages of testing an incredible augmented reality (AR) smart glasses—a tool adapted from human medicine—that is changing how our specialists mentor and assist frontline doctors.

Supporting Interns, Residents, and Emergency Teams
Richard Joseph, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology) has been conducting test runs with our interns and residents. The headset allows a mentor to observe and guide a doctor through hands-on procedures in real time without needing to physically be in the room.
Beyond clinical training, this technology holds massive potential for critical emergency situations. If an emergency case arrives overnight when a specialist isn’t on site, the attending ER doctor can connect directly with a specialist remotely. The specialist can see exactly what the ER doctor sees and guide them step-by-step through assessment and treatment.
How the Augmented Reality (AR) Technology Works
Communication flows seamlessly between the doctor wearing the headset and the remote specialist on a computer anywhere in the world:
For the Doctor in the Room: The headset acts like a hands-free phone call, while the viewfinder displays visual notes, diagrams, graphs, or videos sent directly by the remote specialist.
For the Remote Specialist: On their screen, the specialist views the live feed, uses software tools to annotate or point out areas of interest, pauses the visual field, and sends supportive diagnostic reference material straight to the headset display.
